At the risk of being laughed at, I am admitting to the world that I watched IRIS last night. IRIS=Korean drama series. Burton says that I have issues with my identity. I realize that he's right, but I can't help but feel as though I'm stuck in between different ideas of race, ethnicity, and heritage. But that's for another day. I want to talk about IRIS today.
I watched about 8 hours of this show only to find out that the ending ruined the entire series (20 series=20 hours). I can never watch a series in its entirety because 10 minute flashback montages, 10 minute scenes of lovers crying in angst, and another 30 minutes of dramatic music while two people stare at each other, are just a bit much! So I watched 10 episodes before I realized that I was tired and annoyed, and so I watched the last episode, episode 20 before going to bed. Little did I know that I would be even more annoyed by the ending. Sorry to ruin the plot for you (it's actually waaaay more complex than I'd like to explain: nuclear bombs, secret organization that tries to thwart N and S Korea reunification, deceit, goodies and baddies, baddies are goodies), but the lovers are finally reunited and happy at the end of it all. They spent 15 episodes longing for each other and escaping death to return to each other! But, this is where the writers went completely wrong. The last scenes are composed of lover-lady waiting at a lighthouse for her lover-man. Lover-man is driving to lighthouse with engagement ring. Lover-man crashes RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE LIGHTHOUSE, and is dying in his car as he looks longingly at his lover-lady who is oblivious to the accident because she has headphones in her ears and cannot hear him. One assumes he dies and can never marry the woman he loves. The end.
Life doesn't happen that way. And what's the point of throwing in a twist to the story at the end end end of the entire series! IRIS was actually a good series with excellent acting (I believed it all), complicated and engaging plot, and had a nice combo of comedy, drama, action, and thrillerness. But the ending was so absurd, it felt completely disconnected to the rest of the series. It's common for screenwriters to add some sap and death to drama series, but this time it was so abrupt I immediately felt disengaged from the actors.
On another note, what a beautiful October day! I am loving the extension of warm weather. Thank you Jesus!
Btw, I passed by boards everybody!!!! God is good!
Claire and I went through the whole series too. They threw a twist at the end, because apparently, there's going to be 1) a movie (with an extended ending). and 2) a spin-off.
ReplyDeleteit was frustrating, but still pretty decent. they prolly could've cut it a few episodes with all the flashbacks and what not. every annoying.
we also went through pasta (also on hulu), and we loved the series, only if we didn't watch the last episode. so freakin cheesy. completely destroyed the whole series.
Thanks for the info! No wonder the ending was so weird. Too bad the main character probably won't return to do another series for IRIS...
