LONG TIME NO SEE! Honestly, I haven't seen most of you who read this blog in a long time. The only person I see regularly is Burton, and he doesn't even read this blog.
But you also know that what I mean by this is that I haven't written in awhile, which is much to your disappointment, right?
Quick tangent that will eventually lead to my main point. When people ask me if I'm enjoying public health school, I tell them...HOLY COW are you kidding me? It's awesome to be in public health school in Philly at this time! Philadelphia's department of public health (PDPH), through a competitive grant, has been awarded $15 million dollars to combat obesity and other health issues in Philadelphia over two years (3/10-3/12). Why? Because 50% of all Philadelphia children are overweight or obese. Hard to believe, no? We are in the midst of policy changes, community health initiatives, and other exciting stuff! Not only are some of our professors directly involved in some of the interventions (the Food Trust Healthy Corner Initiative), we are able to participate in the community work conducted in Philly now! Such exciting stuff...
The other day, we had someone from the PDPH come in and talk to us about the campaign (get healthy philly!) and about some of the work she is doing for it. She told us that a new TV commercial was going to air in a week and they (PDPH staff) were really excited about its launch. Then, a couple of weeks later, I saw that commercial! Well, if I hadn't known about the origins of the commercial, I wouldn't have given the commercial a second thought. BUT, since I knew the people who worked on it, where the money for that commercial came from, what the subliminal messages were, what the aim of the commercial was, I got excited too! I'm part of that community now!
But the main point is, I ate McDonald's tonight. After eating there, I can truly understand why it is so hard for people to cut off Mickey D's cold turkey. Their food is legitimately tasty. Whenever I go there, I always ask for a fresh batch of fries. And never have I been denied fresh hot artery clogging fries. So if you're going to eat at McDonald's anyways, ask for a fresh batch of fries.
I read this. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm always a supporter of bettering the PUBLIC'S HEALTH one less french fry at a time. ;)
